The water coming out of the valve is above the water level in the sump? If so you don't need to raise it. Lets go back to moving your gate valve (the valve) from the skimmer output to the pump output.

DO NOT put the brick in the tank...DO NOT listen to your LFS guy anymore.

I'm not saying your LFS guy is a bad guy. You have to remember that those guys are there to make money. Unless you want to send me a check ( cash would be better) I'm just here to help. Anybody that would tell you to put a brick in your sump either doesn't have a clue or is trying to kill your critters so he can sell you more.

thanks i will not put brick in tank. very glad i read this before hubby put it in when he gets home tonight. he asked me earlier if he were to leave the valve where it is but put more hose between the pump and the skimmer would that have the same effect. from what i gathered he wants to know if that would make the pump not produce as much gph? hope that makes some sense to guys, cuz im kind of lost and the whole thing

The valve on the output side is not important. If it makes him\you feel better, go to Lowes or HD and buy another one. You probably have flex tubing between the pump and skimmer. Get a 3/4" gate valve (hmm, about 15.00) get two barbed fittings with 3/4" male threads that will fit your flex tubing (about 1.50 each) put the gate valve in line between the pump and the skimmer and tweek down the pump a bit.

Stand back and think about what I'm saying here. Go get a beer or glass of wine, Its real easy once you see it.

Don't use a ball valve, you want to have better control so get a gate valve.

Thumbs up

We got the skimmer working!!! Used everyones advice. Raised it up and added a valve between the pump and skimmer. After the skimmer got broken in we didn't need the valve anymore.

We won't be taking anymore advice from the lfs anymore. Thanks everyone for all the help!!!
