Will a pond pump work for a sump?

Will a koi pond pump work in a salt water sump?

I a looking at using a laguna power jet 5000 in part of my sumb/fuge configuration and am wondering if this is safe.

I'm not familiar with Hagen Laguna product line. I did some searching around and looked in the product manual but could not find any reference to it's use in saltwater applications. I am also not aware of anyone else that uses one for saltwater.

Pump manufacturers usually have design differences between pumps intended for freshwater and those intended for saltwater. Saltwater is much more corrosive and requires shafts, seals, gaskets, etc., that can handle that environment. They are also subject to calcium deposit buildup, something freshwater pumps do not have to deal with.

It would probably be a good idea to contact the manufacturer of any pump you are considering buying to ask if it is suitable for saltwater applications. Most manufacturers' websites clearly tell you which pumps are for freshwater and which are for saltwater.

I used the 5000 for 3 months no problems.there is a metal nut on the inpeller that you could take off just to be safe. I left mine on but I was not going to keep that pump in my system I was waiting to buy a mag 18 ,the nut does not hold anything together I took the nut off the 7000 in my pond last year the pump is still running alright. some have a nut some don't.
