Lightbulb Question About Sump Vs. Wet/dry Filtation

I HAVE MADE A WET/DRY FILTATION SYSTEM WITH BIO BALLS, IT IS GRAVITY FED WITH RIO 1700 PUMP TO RETURN WATER TO THE TANK MY QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SUMP AND A WET/DRY FILTATION SYSTEM? OH BY THE WAY MY TANK IS A 55 GALLON LONG. IS A WET/DRY FILTATION NEEDED OR IS IT BETTER TO HAVE THE SUMP? i HAVE AN IDEA ABOUT HOW TO MAKE A SUMP BY VEIWING PICS OFF THE WEBSITE, BUT STILL AM UNSURE, IS THERE ANYBODY WHO COULD GIVE ME ISTRUCTION ON HOW TO BUILD IT AND WHAT ALL GOES INTO IT? (INSIDE LIKE LIVE ROCK OR SPONGES OR WHAT?), I THINK IT IS DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PLEXYGLASS THAT IT FLOWS THRU TO RETURN TO THE TANK. IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS OR INSTRUCTIONS, PLEASE SEND THEM THIS WAY I WOULD APPRICIATE IT. THANKS

OK..here goes

1st off - what type of tank? reef? F/O? FOWLR? I ask this because if you have live rock..you do not need a wet/dry. the rock itself is your biological filtration (provided you have approx 1lbs per gallon) *this is only an approximation as different types of rock are more/less dense than each other. If you are running a F/O tank...a wet/dry is a great biological filter. wet/dry/reeftanks do not mix as over time, they accumulate NO3 and leach into your tank (which is very very bad for inverts)

Now..a wet/dry filter is just that..a filter (biological) and a sump is nothing more than a vessel that holds additional water. The added water volume adds to the overall stability of a tank. It is also a place to put all of the equipment (heaters, skimmer, reactors etc) leaving the display tank nice & clean. a lot of us take this to another level and incorporate refugiums to our systems to assist in exporting nutrients (PO4,NO3 etc). do a search for "refugium" for hours of reading

building a sump is not very difficult and is quite fun IMO. do a search for DIY sump or refugium for even more hours of reading enjoyment I will post some pics of my DIY sump/fuge (I got the basic idea here on Reefland)
