Question How many powerheads for a 90 Gallon

I have a 90 gallon with a 20HF rio pump from my sump. How many, if any, powerheads do I need inside the actuall tank?

Hi malawiMD,

It's not the number of powerheads, it's the amount of current that needs to be considered. What kind of tank are you working with (mixed reef, SPS reef, FO, etc.)?

Instead of adding a number of powerheads to your aquarium, I would suggest you look into 1 of the new Tunze Stream pumps; I use the 6060's and they work out nicely. For a mixed reef you could probably add 1 6060 to your 90 gallon, in addition to your return pump, and have a nice amount of flow.

Thanks for the advise Scott. I looked them up, and I will get one of those for sure. Do you think the 6060 is enough flow?

My 90g reef has 3 Hagen 802's and a Hagen Pro4 for about 1500g/hr total, and the return pump from the sump has a mag 1800 which divides the flow to both ends, one upper one lower.

At 1600gph for the Tunze 6060, I think that will be enough flow in a 90 for a mixed reef.
