umm...

They sell addictives to purify tap-water, they claim that 16oz treats 1000 gallons and costs $7 USc.

What I did not see is spesific claims that it is good for corrals ...

my tap water seems to be fine for Pirranhas as is

Any Ideas ?

Thanks

The additives do not actually "purify" tap water, really what they do is neutralize heavy metals and chlorine/chloramine. This still leaves the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of your water typically too high to be 'healthy' for corals..... especially hard corals.... Softies are a little more forgiving, but really, R/O and/or RO/DI is going to be the best choice in the long run, since it removes the unwanted elements that can (and usually does) cause many problems (algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, etc.)

I'm not saying that these problems never occur with use of RO/DI water, but they usually take alot longer to manifest, go away much faster, etc. Phosphates is algae food basically, and most tap water has too much phosphates for a healthy tank. (and phosphate remover chemicals are Expensive, and dangerous if used improperly to boot!)

In other words.... The chemicals are ok maybe for temporary use, but in the long run it is better..... FAR better to use RO/DI from the get-go. It will save you alot of extra maintenance in the future.

Sueet is correct. The best recommendation is a good RO/DI unit to filter all of your tank water through.

I spoke to this guy for 2 hours on the phone the other night, took two full pages of notes on the RO/DI units. I gotta say I was very impressed that he took the time to explain to me thoroughly what these units do, why they are important etc etc. Today I am ordering the Premium 75 gpd unit from him with some attachments. Total is going to be around 200 with shipping but well worth it.

If you really want me to I'll summarize my notes and post them but it's a lot to type so you may just wanna call him yourself.
