skimmer pumps

I currently have a sump with a mag5 return to my aquarium. i also have a spare mag7 pump. I am about to buy an MR1 skimmer, but am not sure what to do about the pump. I dont really know how the system is set up. I was wondering if it would be possible to combine my 500 and 700 pumps together to run both the skimmer and the return line from skimmer to tank, rather than buying the suggested mag12. Or should I just buy the 1200 and run that in addition to the 500 return? Sorry if this is a dumb or confusing question. i guess the main question is is the line out of the skimmer supposed to act as a return line to the tank, or does it just pumpfrom and back into the sump
Thanks for your help
