Carbon filters or not ?

Hi everyone ,i'm a bit confused
I recently was at a fish store, long story short I use external filters with the bio wheels, I was told not to use the carbon filters as this will remove the trace elements
I never knew this and I have been using them for about a year ,never had a problem with my tank (125 gal) about 100 lbs of live rock, all fish only
I do a 10 gal a week water change as it is easy to do this vs 25% at the end of the month, my fish have trippled there size so Am I wrong for using carbon filters ?????

I actually just stopped using my filter. I dont think there are too many negitives to the carbon but it just may not be needed all the time. Please correct me if im wrong

I'm just afraid not to use them plus everything has been good in my tank plus my water has been so nice and clear, I jsut think if its working leave it alone, not sure if thats a good way to think but I would hate to change anything as I believe for every action theres a reaction

i removed mine for now to see if that was the cause of my high Nitrates. I found that it was a breeding ground for algae and other than that was just moving water. Check out my question and the answers in the fish only section

I never had a nitrite or nitrate problem so I can't see the carbon causing that, have you done anything just before it went up like add a fish or rock or move anything around??????

added a couple blue damsels, dont think that would get me to the top 1/3 on the nitrates scale.
