Electricity usage on chiller

I'm looking into purchasing a new chiller and noticed that sometimes a higher horsepower chiller actually uses less electricity than a smaller one. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I'm looking at the specs on the Aqualogic Delta Star 1/3 and 1/2 horsepower chillers.

Model DS-4 1/3 hp= 7.2A @ 115v
Model DS-6 1/2 hp= 4.8A @ 230v

There is a 2.4A difference in electricity usage. How many watts is that? How do I make the comparison when one is in 120v (115v) and the other at 240v (230v)?

Does that mean even at a higher horsepower and higher cooling power, there is actually less electricity consumption?

Just seen the thread. Anyway, if you get this... Volts X Amps = Watts

V x A = W

the chillers, if I have the numbers correct.... 115v X 7.2a = 828 WATTS or... You will use .828 Kilowatts

230v X 4.8a = 1104 WATTS or... 1.104 Kilowatts (per hour)
Hopefully I plugged in the correct numbers. Hope this helps

Jeff

Actually,

There is resistance to consider but, the difference is a wide gap. Personally, I would get the larger chiller. This mainly due to less run time to cool the same amount of water. The smaller chiller may have to run for several hours to accomplish the same amount of work the larger can do in a few minutes.

Please note that the 1/2 HP chiller would need a 220v line. That accounts for much of the amperage difference. Double the volts, halve the amperage. 220v appliances are generally more efficient, which is why most electric dryers use the higher voltage.

Doug,

Most definately I agree. I tried to simplify for his reply. Just showing how to figure watts. I would prefer 220 over lower voltage.
