Protein Skimmers

Does anyone have experience with the Seaclone 100 Protein Skimmer?

I have a 75gal FOWLR tank and need a reletivly inexpensive PS (under $100). Or it could be more expensive, if there is a divorce lawyer willing to help me out. What would you suggest?

Thanks,
Jerry

Check out the search option using SeaClone, most of the threads will look like this one, Seaclone Protein Skimmer AQ Systems

I would steer clear of it...

My seaclone 100 barely skims enough for my 20 gallon. It does an ok job on it but I'd be better off with a cpr. For a 75g NO WAY.

OK, so far I've heard that Seaclone sucks, and that CPR is good. What other ones or good? My lfs has a Prizm which looks like a hang on box filter. He says it's the "NEW" thing in skimmers. Is it, or is he just trying to sell it to me?

I'm guessing the skimmers with the actual pump & impeller are more efecient than the ones that use forced air only. Would this be a correct statement?

Some air driven skimmers work very well, some do not. As far as the Prizm goes, it is NOISY, but it does work a LOT better then the SeaClone. That does not mean it is a "good" skimmer though. Aqua C makes a line of skimmers called Remora, those are equal too, if not better then the CPR. Unfortunately there are TONS of skimmers out there, but only a few actually work well. Granted they all "work" but some require constant attention to water/air mixtures, others to water level in the reaction chamber, and still others sound like a STEAM ENGINE in your living room! SO far what I have seen agreed on are skimmers by: My Reef Creations, Euro Reef, and I have a Kent Nautilus, but I had to do some mods to make it work better. For small size skimmers the only ones that get constant accolades are the CPR and Remora Pro...

Reefland uses a MR-1 from My Reef on his 75 gallon, I think it is driven by a Mag12 or 18. Samper is also just setting up a 75 gallon and he chose the Euro Reef...

A protein skimmer is in my opinion, the single most important component to your tanks filtration and overall well being. You could have the BEST lights, circulation and live rock, but if your Water quality SUCKS you will not have a successful tank.

Maybe next time you are in the LFS take a whiff of the stuff the collects in the skimmer, then you will REALLY understand!!!

Exclamation Sea Clone

I guess you could do what I did and buy the Sea Clone for about $80.00. Then about 2 months later relize it was a waste and get the CRP Bak Pak 2. There is not even any comparison. You will just be wasting your money one the sea clone.. Hope this helps. Let us know what you get.

If you have to have a HOT skimmer I would go with the Remora Pro with the prefilter and bubble trap. If you can place one in a sump, that is a different ball game. AquaC makes great in-sump skimmers, as does My Reef Creations, Euro Reef, etc. For HOT though, the AquaC Remora Pro gets my vote.

I've ordered the Won Brother skimmer rated for 125 gal tank. I may end up getting something else if I'm not happy with it, but right now it's a cash thing.

Thanks for the advise. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Most dissolved organics will float to the top of your tank, looks like an oil slick. This skimmer gets it water from the bottom of the tank.

Wow, Im glad I checked in here. I just bought a Sea Clone 100 but havent hooked it up yet. Doesnt really fit. From the sounds of it it might be just as well. I think I got worked on the price too. $140. Ive got a 90 gal with quite oa bit of live rock, corals, anenomes, ect... and no skimmer yet. Which do you guys think I should get? Can I order them online? My local guy seems to have a very limited selection.

I've gotten the skimmer in and it's making nasty brown foam (looks like an old water pipe I had in college), but very little is making it to the cup. If I shorten the U-Tube, so the pump is higher in the tank, will/should that give me enough pressure to get the foam into the cup?

Absolutely you can order them online! Check out the sponsors page! They have some excellent deals and are very good with customer service. Personally I have ordered from www.premiumaquatics.com and have been extremely pleased!

If the entire tube is submerged, changing the height won't make much difference in the foam production. (Depending on WHERE the venturi is placed.) With my skimmer I can adjust the height of water in teh reaction chamber by opening or closing a gate valve on the output side. DOes your skimmer have a valve of some sort you can close a little? THat would raise the water level, and push the foam higher into the collection area.

Reason for new tank: Son of 11 years old finally broke me down
I am new to the reef system. I bought him a 24g Nano cube thinking that would be the cheapest route. I realize new that it would be best to add a protien skimmer. I would like it to fit in the middle compartment in back. It could be in the sump line, HOT system ( wall in side of middle stage with dimensions 3 1/4" w, 6" d, 13" tall, 2 1/2" overhead clearance). I read where someone had a seaclone 100 in the same tank and I think it would fit, but I see that they are not that effective by reading the threads posted.
