ALRIGHT! My grades come out next week and I will have good enough grades to finally start! I will be starting in about a month, and i have basically my setup and equipment all planned out and such. One last question though, as the title states...I found a bunch of great website on DIY sumps and how to set them up and everything, i just still dont understand how to plumb it to the tank. I will be getting a Lifereef overflow. Does that come with a plumbing kit to get the water to the sump? If not, how would i go about transferring my water to and from the tank and sump. Thanks!

I doubt it comes with the plumbing. Go to lowes or home depot and pick up some pvc parts to make it happen. Shouldn't be more than a few elbows and straight pieces. The overflow will dump into the sump where your skimmer will be. The skimmer will skim the water and it will flow over and under a few baffles to another compartment which can be used for a refug or just more water.....then into the compartment where your return pump will be. The return pump must be pressure rated so it will pump water back up to the main.

thanks! ok so i should just get some pvc pipes...do they come in little parts and i glue them together or can i get different lengths....also, this may sound stupid, but anyway, the overflow has a nozzle (i dont know what its called, maybe bulkhead as you all say so much) that directs the water down, or is it a hole, or what? and will the pvc fit if it is a nozzle or whatever? that probly sounds really confusing. oh well. any help is appreciated. thanks.

looks like a nozzle or what not... but it has grooves like one would screw it into something...maybe it does come with a kit?

I have a siphon overflow and the bulkhead was a 1'' sched 40 pcv. read your directions if it calls for a sch40 you must use that because it refers to the thicknes of the pipe so effects the od. and if it works like mine it glues to the inside of the bulkhead.or you can buy a special fitting that allows you to use hose. pvc is much cheaper and if you whant to take it apart you can get a glue in union. as for cutting it i use a power miter saw with a plywood blade but a hacksaw will work fine. be sure to use primer with the glue not expensive and will pevent leaks. I love these threads feel i can contribute.

alright on the site it says 1" male thread such and such, i think thats what you're telling me about the thinkness of the pipe, am i right? thanks for your help everyone!

i bought a cpr cs100 at marien depot $93 i like it because it has a small port on to that you can hook up to a power head on the outflow tih creates a low pressure area and sucks air bubbles out of the siphon tube. to much air to big bubble break siphon water everywhere wife ready to kill bad thing. on this box the pipe glues directly into the bulkhead fitting. on the pipe size the sch refers to the pressure rating of the pipe same id differnt od so you must use what to mfg recomends. sorry about the spelling no my strong suit. Just take the bulkhead to the supply store wth you and make sure i would bet it is fit for sch 40 pcv to fit inside of it the pipe itself not the fittings

alright i got most of that, what is sch? but basically, what i got from that is i need to get pvc piping that fits the bulkhead (nozzle thing, right?). i hope so, lol. thanks again.

yes thats right the pipe it-self sch stands for schedule its just a rating basicly the thickness of the pipe wall. like i said just make sure the pipe fits inside the bulkhead fitting.

That fitting at the bottom of the overflow is for flexible pvc pipe. It's a little more expensive but you don't have to use many elbows which doesn't restrict water flow as much. Get some reinforced flexible pvc that will fit over that fitting and a hose clamp and you're all set. Make sure if you do attach elbows later on down the line that you get the two-part glue. Flexible pvc needs a primer and a glue part. The primer actually melts pvc into each other making a better fit. Also, I just put a modified durso standpipe on this exact overflow and it really quiets that thing down. Look into it.
