New Reef Tank, what substrate if any?

I am setting a new tank up pretty much using the berlin method (natural method) and (according to the book I have got) i'm not supposed to use any substrate.
The trouble is I would like to keep the Banana Wrasse that require substrate to survive. What should I do or use?! (also i think it looks better than just glass)

Look forward to your comments & suggestions.

Benefits of Sumps

Also what are the benefits of having sumps and how would I adapt my aquarium to fit a sump and how much does the plumming and everything cost?

I currently have a fluval 404 and my aqairum is only a small 190 litre tank. (there is also an internal filter that come with the system)

Please ignore the above message. I have discovered for my self why I should use a sump instead of canister filters. But im still interested in finding more about the substrate guys...

You can go semi barebottom by using starboard/cutting board for the bottom of the tank and make a plexiglass "tray" to put in a corner of your tank with some sand in it. Otherwise you will have to abandon one or the other of the things you want.
