Any Recommendations: Sumps/Refugium

I have a 60 Gallon TRUVU 48" long aquarium.

I appreciate any thoughts on a CPR Aquafuge Pro versus buying a seperate sump/refugium and skimmer? The aquafuge is 31" long and I'm also considering a custom sump that's 36" long. Is there huge advantage of having a sump that's 5 inches longer and is it worth the money? A LFS can make me a custom sump that's 36 inches long x 10.5 inches wide x 14 inches tall for $175.

What are the advantages of a Euro-reef skimmer versus the skimmer provided in the Aquafuge? I have a 60 Gallon TRUVU tank and my budget is around $500 for a sump/refugium/skimmer/pump/plumbing/plants-algae/sand and light. I need to buy an overflow box as well and I'm considering a CPR hang-on. I only want to do a FOWLR tank with the option to convert over to coral in the future. I may consider adding a UV light to the sump as a possible future upgrade.

I appreciate any responses...

Hi WuTang,

As far as I am aware, there is no skimmer built into the Aquafuge.

I personally would look at the sump with a good skimmer (the Euro Reef would be great) and an added fuge, whether it was a HOT fuge or something included in the sump.

The Aquafuge "Pro" version comes with a skimmer according to CPR. Please refer to the link in my original message. Do you have any thoughts on the Euro-reef versus the skimmer provided in the Aquafuge? Also, is it worth the money to buy a sump/refugium that's 5" longer but 1.5" less deeper than the Aquafuge Pro? The Aquafuge Pro definitely saves me some money since it already comes with the skimmer.

Thanks.

check out my gravel pit...

I had a CPR for awhile and the mechanics of the skimmer that it used didn't much add up. The amount of bubbles produces were not adequate and the amount of time that the bubbles came in contact with the water didn't seem sufficient either. I would go with the separate everything but on a budget that's tough. I'll bet you could bang out something sump style and make it run real well for $500. Check that LFS custom sump price against some online sumps. It sounds like they could be charging a little too much.

P.S. Wu Tang clan ain't nothin' to mess with...

what ich said....
i had two rubbermaids plummed together.. one for fuge, other was just a sump with a skimmer in it...
spend the bucks on a good return pump and good skimmer and pump... along with a good overflow... not a cpr overflow..

I just found this thread...

this is exactly what I want to do... do you have any pics of how you did this. Also, a description of it would help... how do you keep the water level low enough for it now to overflow??

Thanks, Jenni

I have been doing some reading on refugiums and overflows. I have a 20g long tank for a sump. I just bought another 20g long to make refugium. As far as the overflow most people have suggested a lifereef over flow. guaranteed not to lose suction. www.lifereef.com
