Powerhead Heat Generation
As I am still in the curing of new live rock stage, I am not currently using any lighting in my tank. I will be running four 96 watt pc's and do have concerns regarding heat generation when the lighting is activated (I would prefer not to have to go the chiller route).
That being said, I appear to have a temperature challenge prior to activation of lighting. All that is currently running is the filtration system and two Maxi-Jet 900 powerheads. For some reason, even though my heaters are turned way down to 74 degrees, my tank temperture is currently 80 (and the room temperature is 73). My question is, would the two submerged powerheads generate sufficient heat to drive up my tank temperature? My guess is that the submerget powerheads should not generate that much heat - but I look forward to input. |

I would suspect NO what size is your tank? Also check to make sure that nothing is jammed in the impellar of either powerhead. I have 2 MAG 12's and 2 Hagen 402's and I don't get anywhere near the kind of heat you are describing.

It's on;y 72 gallons. Thanks, I didn't think that the powerheads should generate that much heat. I am trying to eliminate suspects. I'm going to try to disconnect one heater at a time in order to see if there is some problem with one of the thermostats.

No problems... I would suspect a heater myself.
