    Protein skimmer for 300 gal.

Hey... Hope you all had a great x-mas and a happy new years...
I am interested in buying a new 300 gl. tank. What type of protein skimmer should I used for this size of tank? Any suggestions????? I was looking at a G3.
Also what type of heaters for such a tank.

I was thinking of using my 135gl tank as my sump for the 300gl. Wonder what you guys thought of that idea also. This is something I will have done when I move into the new house.

    Have you looked here ?

I'll bet an MR-3 would be great, or if you want REALLY BIG go to his LARGER skimmers like the MR-4, 5, 6.

Andy also has some great combo's there, I'll bet if you get the skimmer and Ca Reactor from him he will give you a better deal.

    That's dual becketts
I think it was close to $600, but don't quote me on that.
Try barraquatic.com Brent is usually pretty competitive. The extension cost me another $50-$100. It has only been working since last Monday, so I'm still gettin it dialed in.

Nice picture Charlie! I own 2 of them and a third is on the way

I think that your 135 would make a great sump for a 300. If you are going to run halides on the 300 then I would use a couple of 250W Ebojager heaters.

Kevin, I was thinking of using the 135 for the sump. What size return pump should I use on it? Also how do you seperate the sump. Live rock in section 1, refuge in section 2, and the return pump, protein skimmer and heater in section 3?

As always thanks for the help guys...

If you are going to use a submersible pump I would recommend a Mag 24 pond pump. Sump/refugiums are usually divided into 3 sections. The first is where the water enters from the tank above. This section should be 6-10" wide followed by at least 3 baffles and up to 5 (I use 5). The first baffle is always attached to the bottom of the tank so that the water must flow over it. Baffles are usually spaced 2" apart so you can get your hand in between if required. The purpose of the baffles is to prevent micro bubbles from entering the return pump at the other end of the sump. The center is for plants and rocks and is usually the largest section. The last section is for the pump to sit and has a short 6"-8" high baffle to prevent plants from getting sucked into the pump.

    HTH,
