SQWD 1"
I've heard rumors that there will soon be on the market a 1" SQWD. I'd like to use one of these but would like to use it within the next month or so. I've heard that they are hard to plumb into pvc but don't know why and that they can be noisy at times. Any information you can give me about them will be taken into consideration. If the 1" isn't available at the time of my setup are there any other options?

There has been talk about a 1" version for quite awhile but I haven't heard anything about when it may be available. Unless they change the design what makes it "hard" to connect to PVC is that it has barbed fittings instead of threads. The easiest way to connect it to PVC is to use short lengths of tubing, hose clamps, and barb adapters to convert it to threaded connections.
I have been using the original (3/4") model for a little more than a year now with no problems. I haven't had any trouble with noise at all but maybe thats because I am nowhere near the rated capacity that it can handle. HTH, Skip |

My 3/4" worked for a little over a year without fail, then one day stuck to one side only and started to drip from the scwd unit very slowly - so I replaced it with a T-fitting.
Skip describes well how I dealt with plumbing it - not that hard, just a little tricky with all the parts. I had no noise with mine, also ran mine much under spec [Mag 7, I'd say maybe 3-400 gph through the outlets with 4' head factored in, a guess]. Great for my softie tank IMO - but just can't handle the flow [or probably the slightly elevated Ca/Alk] on my SPS tank. -- I've been hearing that the 1" scwd should be out from late summer on ... but nothing yet. I wouldn't base your plumbing on it - as you could be waiting a lot longer ![]() But consider that it could show up - so I'd build the flexibility to add one in into your plumbing. Just my opinion, good luck whatever you decide. |

Samper:
I know that you have a fairly deep sand bed. I was interested in purchasing a SQWD, my only concern was/is that it's random rotation would reek havoc with my sand bed. As it is my MJ 900s need to be carefully aimed in order not to rearrange my substrate. |
