Wet/Dry Filter

Proclear Aquatics Pro Series Wet/Dry Filtration w/Prefilter ( Pro 150 Wet/Dry w/Prefilter )

I recently purchased this wet/dry filter. This included a skimmer. How long until I can expect the filter to develop its biological filter capabilities within the bio balls? I have some nitrates (20ppm). Which I understand isn't great but isn't overall THAT bad. I placed a part of the filter (foam) from my cannister filter in the water flow to assist in the biological set up but just wondering what to look for. Thanks all for your time.

Let me give you one suggestion, search for the terms "wet/dry" and "bio balls" using the search link at the top of the page. I don't think you'll like what you read.

Well, I did some further research and found out that not all is lost. Although wet/dry isn't the "best" one to have. The fact that I have a skimmer before the bioballs makes this an acceptable alternative. Not the #1 choice but it will work for now till I replenish the bank account. Does this sound reasonable to you Reefland? The nitrates are slowly going down. Thanks again.

I think the skimmer is helping and the balls hurting, take the balls out and just run the skimmer and see what happens. I'll bet the trates come down even faster!

Cool

I have a wet/dry. too. The bio balls lasted 8 months.... no dead coral but not growing to fast. I just removed 25% of the ball 3 weeks ago, then another 25% last week.... already the NITRATE LEVEL has dropped. All others were always 0.

Just remove a few at a time....my live rock and DSB is over 6 months old.
