Need some help with new sump

    Hello all.

I am seting up a 60 gallon acrylic tank that will be drilled. It will have 2 holes to drain water from display tank into sump and it will have 2 holes to return from sump. It will also have 1 more hole to drain water into a water pump and 2 other holes for return from water pump, which is basically a closed loop. Im thinking of using a Quiet One 4000 water/ return pumps, which are rated at 1017 gph. My concern is that the sump will be made out of a 20 gallon tank that I have.

My concern is, do you think that the 20 gallon sump can handle a rate of 1017 gph. I think i might pick it up a bit since I will be having SPS in that tank. So maybe around 1800 gph. What do you think? I also want to add a refugium in that sump so I will need to install some baffles.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think that will be too much flow in a 20 gallon sump, especially with a refugium incorporated into it. I tried to run a MAG 18 on our 75 gallon with a 20 gallon sump and it was too much, I couldn't get rid of the bubbles.

I am running about 1100 gph through a 40 gallon sump/refugium and I can't picture it going any higher. If you are planning on having a refugium, you probably don't want too much current through there. You might be better of putting more through your closed loop. Remember, too, that the faster you pump water out of your sump, the higher the water level will be in your tank (unless you have very large drains). All the water you are furiously pumping into the tank will end up in the sump if the power goes off or you shut the return pumps down. I have 2 one inch drains in my tank and that will handle about 1200 gph. To go above that you would need to have larger drains.
