mj1200 question

When you guys have mj's inside of your tank, what do you put on the intake, is it necessary to use one of the attachments? will little fish get chewed up? Is using a sponge over one of the attachments a bad idea bc of nitrates? thanks.

On mine, I use the `barrel shaped' strainer on the intake.

Twice I've had them knocked off, both times lost clownfish to the powerhead. I wouldn't run without one [nevermind snails will get eaten too].

I skipped any sponge, as I don't want to have to weekly clean them [monthly is bad enough].

Just my take on it.

Do either of you use the air tube attachment in order to oxiginate the tank?

I am not currently using the air attachment, and I have never seen any reference to air stones or any other air attachments in a reef tank. Does the skimmer provides sufficient aeration in a reef tank?

As far as I understand [sometimes not that far] ... the skimmer, [and overflow/sump system] should provide more than adequate oxygenation/gas exchange.

Many folks as well will run their flow/powerheads/etc so that the surface of the tank is being disturbed/slightly chaotic which would help as well. At worst, I found the surface water disturbing seemed to make my MH point-source ripple even `sparklier'.

Just what I understand to be true.

I use the little screen... And I can vouch for the SNAILS getting eaten up by an guarded intake, but for some reason ONLY the BIG EXPENSIVE Mexican turbo's. I lost 3 this way before I found that stupid little screen!

As for the air, you won't need it as long as you have GOOD surface movement, a surface skimmer into the sump keeps water moving across the surface where the gas exchange actually occurs! (Another reason to have a SUMP )

Thanks guys. How do those monster turbos manage to get stuck in the powerhead basket?

I don't use the strainers on ours. We have lost 1 fish to one but I'm not so sure that the fish wasn't sick already.
