I am really not a big fan of those Rainbow Lifeguard units. They are awfully expensive for what you get; a canister/pleated micron filter, heater chamber, activated carbon reactor, UV, and fluidized bed biological filter.
If you use enough liverock and sand, the fluidized bed biological filter is simply unnecessary and those particular models are a maintenance nightmare. I find most people would benefit more from a proper quarantine tank versus a UV sterilizer. I just place my heaters in the sump. I don't find any need to the reaction chamber for a heater. I usually forgo mechanical filtration like that pleated micron filter. And, you can just toss a bag of activated carbon in the sump. Or get one of the many inexpensive reactors like Two Little Fishies Phos-Ban reactor. You can load these with phosphate removing resin or activated carbon, whatever your needs maybe. Or buy two and run them in a series. It shouldd be cheaper and likely even more effective because of the tumbling action. |
