so does it actually mater what you skimmate looks like?
as long as bubbles are poping over the side and collecting in the cup is doing its job?
It's doing its job but at different levels of efficiency. If you get a thick/dark skimmate, you're obviously not taking out as much water but you're also not taking out as much organic material. If you have a light skimmate, you're taking out more water but you're also getting more organics along with it (you just have to empty it out more often). I have mine set so that it pretty much fills up at the end of every day (a medium color).Originally Posted by wozza
Can anyone comment on WillieM's post?? Is it true that a wetter more voluminous skimmate removes more organic matter than the drier less voluminous "turd" that Kevin has very attractively pictured for us? I have an MRC MR-2 skimmer with a Mag-18 pump. I have only produced a wet greenish skimmate but assumed this was due to my low bio-load. I currently only have 2 perculas, a blue dot jawfish and one small frag with zoos and shrooms.
Thanks
Rob
I wouldn't let the appearance of the skimmate drive my skimmer adjustment, only the production. If you are getting about 1 cup every 2-3 days I think you are doing pretty good.
