Question Placing of a power head in tank...

I have a 55G Fish only tank (with lava rock) and just purchased a Maxi-Jet 400 pump/ power head to help with the water flow in the tank.

I have the return from the sump coming in on the right side of the tank, pushing water from right-to-left...(in the direction of the sump skimmer box) should I place the power head on the right of the tank creating right-to-left flow, or on the left creating left-to-right flow (Going in the opposite direction from the sump return...) ??

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

thanks,
-Alex

I don't think that a mj 400 will make much difference in your overall water flow for a 55g. I have 3 mj 1200's on a 20 gallon and am thinking of adding 2 more. That's for my sps though, as long as you don't have any dead spots you'll be alright.

Hey samper, do you aim your powerheads towards your rocks (hench downwards) or do you just keep the flow at the top? I need to know if I am aiming my power heads right.

You should aim your current in whatever direction is needed to remove any spots in the tank that do not have current flowing through them. Whether it is at the rock work, under it, on top of it, in front of it, behind it, etc.; do whatever you need to keep water moving throughout the entire tank.

I have a 55g with 3 MJ 1200's. The main pump from the sump is a Mag 7. The Mag comes from the left. I have 1 1200 om the far right, one in the middle blowing left and one on the far left. The one on the far right works "against" my Mag 7 so to speak. But all 3 1200's are on a Red Sea Wavemaker so it is hard to say what they are doing at any one time...........
