MAG7 Pump Shaft Binding.....

Hey Everyone!

Well since I have added a Kalk reactor to my tank I have been problems with the Mag Pump shafts binding up. Has anyone else run into a similar problem? I was thinking about adding a really thin coat of silicon on it to help increase the run time between cleaning. I have been cleaning the shafts ever two weeks now. Maybe I should get rid of the food grade pickling lime and buy lab grade kalkwasser.... Any thoughts? Thanks!

Greg,

I use a couple of MAG pumps for our system and am not having any problems. I run an 18 for our skimmer and a 7 for our return with no problems. Does the shaft look really bad when you do clean it?

Hey Scott!

No it doesn't look bad.... There is usually some calcium deposits on the inside of the motor housing and on the ends of the ceramic shaft. Since the tolerance between the shaft and magnet are pretty close it doesn't take very much to make it stick. What does make it stick is the little deposits that collect on either end..... Kevin asked about my Magnesium levels. I guess if it is high enough the calcium won't be able to crystalize. I am going to go check it now.....
