Question Durso Standpipe problems

Anyone have any solutions for keeping the air hole at the top of the durso from clogging due to salt spray (I'm guessing)? Earlier on when I started using it I seemed to have the perfect setup and would go a few days without it ever clogging up. However, you know we've gotta dink around with stuff and muck up the whole thing and I have never been able to get it working properly since. I'm unclogging it with a toothpick every day.

My setup is as follows:

90G AGA with overflow
1 1/4" Durso type standpipe (custom)
flexible hose to sump

I've also noticed that depending on how I turn the flexible hose...which is not straight BTW...the standpipe will either drain too much, or not enough from the overflow.

You could try driller the hole a bit bigger and putting an air valve in the hole?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I had tried that before and the air valve clogs worse. I've actually changed my drain pipe to 1" pvc and it seems to be working better now and the air hole is almost a 1/4" wide so I dont think I'll be having that problem again...now if I could only dampen the whistle more..lol
