"Baffle"-ing...
I was wondering if anyone has come up with a practical way of placing baffles in the sump tank to minimize or completely eliminate the chance of a tank overflow in the case of a faulty or broken siphon overflow box?

I think the main tank. The key here is to make sure that the volume held within the last compartment of the sump (the one that holds the water for the return pump) is not so much that it will overflow the tank. On our 75 gallon, we could hold about 1" of water before the tank overflowed, if the drain was to clog. That means that my last compartment can hold about 3.5 gallons of water safely.
