If you are going to have a sump under your display tank , use the biggest that will fit under your stand.

Not really....the bigger the better but of course we can't afford 10,000 gallon sumps. What I'd do is figure out exactly what you want to put in it and make sure it'll all fit. Anything is better than nothing.

Bigger is better.
The more water volume that you add to the system the more stable it will be and the larger bio-load that it will handle. On that note you should incorporate a refugium if possible. They help to reduce nitrates and nitrites from the water and well as help to oxygenate it. The fuge is also a great place to grow pods and place frags etc....

I'd go at least 50 gallons. As Greg stated, the bigger the better. More water volume = more stability. You would also have the options of a larger return pump, depending on what you are gonna have in there. Plus, it's more fun to have alot of water.JMHO!!!

I use a 55 gallon tank for my sump, it is about 2/3 full, so I suspect it holds an additional 35-40 gallons of water. I have my protein skimmer EXTERNAL so that holds an additional gallon or 2, back in my sump I have both my heaters in the sump, and LOTS and LOTS of Algae! I have a couple different types in there...
