Pumps

is there a rule of thumb when chosing pumps to run your sump? if so how do you figure your output and your return? and should i use pvc with check valves to help flow and to keep from overflowing the tanks? if anyone has pics to spark an idea it would be much appreciated?

thanx

More GPH the better. No check valves they are noisy, a simple air hole just below water level is enough to break the siphon should power fail. Once you see an overflow sump arraingement set-up and running all will become clear, it really is alot simpler then it sounds...

It will depend on your overflow and amount of GPH it can handle and size of your sump and tank as well. Generally, you don't want too much flow through the small sump as you won't be able to control air bubbles and they'll end up in your display tank. Average hang on back overlow boxes from CPR have flow rate range from 300 to 1400 gph. I think standard built in overflows that come with predrilled 1" bulkhead for draining handle about 700gph through them, an average.

well i have one overflow in my 120gal it has the standard 1" hole predrilled and i am using a 1200gph pump and a 586gph pump in my sump so i am guessing about 1600gph is actually the flow rate in the overflow. and the overflow only has about 3" of water with the toilet bowl drainage going on. so i think it can handle a lot more.
