Anybody got an idea of where i can get a good/cheap skimmer for a 29gal tank or build one with good plans? It needs to be cheap wife giving me fits.
In sump would be better than HOB.
When I say cheap I mean under $100

About the only thing I'd think you'd find in that range would be DIY or used - I wouldn't check for new.
I have a BakPak in-sump on my 40 softie tank that works pretty well - not a huge skimmer but pretty economical. I liked my Remora Pro a lot more, but ended up selling that as resale was so high [sold mine used for $160, so doubtful under $100].
THose are the only two cheaper skimmers I know - both are ok and probably the only two I'd consider from that range. Just my take![]()
Red Sea Prizm used on ebay can be found for under $100. I don't have anything negative to say about mine other than it can be a little touchy and skims too wet at times.

Try the aquaeuro skimmers. They have very good review.

I must say that a skimmer is the main filtration for any marine tank. Trying to save a few bucks on one will not be benificial to your system and may even end up costing you more money in the long run. I use a Remora on my 25 gallon. A skimmer should be able to pull good skimmate. It should not pull skimmate all the time. If it does the bio load of your system is to much for the skimmer to handle. In that case you will end up upgrading anyway. Also the "cheaper" skimmers may not produce as many or as small bubbles as the better made skimmers. They may also not provide the proper amount of contact time for the air and water. These things will cause poor performance. There are many things to consider when looking for skimmer but "cheap" is not one of them. My suggestion would be to wait a bit and save a few more bucks or to buy a good used skimmer..... I hope that info helps....
