New Tank
I am planning anf thinking about getting a salt water tank. But I don' the basic equipment I would need including the filtration. I am thinking about getting a 44 gallon corner tank and i was thinking about getting a fluval filter and an Eheim filter or just one of them. Iwould really appreciate some advice.

I know I'm not alone in running my tank with just live rock and a powerful skimmer. For many coral tanks, mechanical filtration [like cannister filters] are considered problematic - as their tendency to accumulate debris [and our tendency not to want to clean them every few days] leads to a slow accumulation of nutrients between cleaning.
But, people have run tanks successfully with them - don't get me wrong. I just know I prefer to run with an overpowered skimmer which seems to serve the same end-purpose. Please, ask as many questions as you want. Starting any tank is a confusing process full of contradictory information and difficult decisions ... and if we can help, we will. I know I value the advice I got early on, some of which saved me a lot of money on equipment I wanted [but now wouldn't want]. Good luck, and hopefully more folks will chime in. Everyone runs their tank a little different ... and looking around, evidently a range of things work well. |

I think the very first question that needs to be answered is what exactly you intend to keep in your tank. Is it going to be a reeftank or fish only, that sort of thing. ![]() Like Mark said, there are many ways to set up a marine aquarium and ultimately it will be your choice but we can help with some information. As far as buying your equipmant, check out our sponsors page.

You need to get some books and do some research. This is not a hobby you just jump into. You could end up loosing alot of money.

Hi Tedski, Welcome to Reefland!
I couldn't agree more that a couple of good books will go a very long way. Check out our bookstore for Robert Fenner's Conscientious Marine Aquarist, Eric Borneman's Aquarium Corals and Anthony Calfo's Book of Coral Propagation: http://www.reefland.com/bookstore.php?s= |
