Bonehead play of the day....
I have started this thread in the filtration forum for people like me.
Here is my contribution to the thread. I ordered some replacement parts for my Vortex Diatom Filter to include a gravel washer attachment. It was a spur of the moment add on the the order. No problem if it does not work to well no big deal. I still had the Vortex primed and ready so I thought what the heck I have a little time before I have to go to work to play around with it. Put the hose attachments together on the washer submerged it into the aquarium and then noticed I did not have enough extension to get to the bottom since the Filter was placed on the floor. No big deal I'm a bright boy I'll figure something out so like a kid I put it on top of some boxes to raise it up and allow me to use the washer attachment. Cool it was working out just fine. Gravel Washer attachment actually works out pretty good thats the plus side. Now here is the Bonehead play of the day. You make the call. By Raising it up off the floor and placing it on top of boxes I was just asking to have it fall and pull the hoses out of the output side. Yep and water just came flowing out like a busted dam. Man I about dropped a load. Water going all over my electricial devices - I did stop it pretty quick but the Bonehead play of the day was done. I have now shut down and unplugged all my equipment got the towels out and mopping up the floor and waiting for everything to dry before plugging them back in again. How to you say - DOH!!! |

Here is another one for the top ten bonehead plays of the day. About 15 years ago I had my 55 galon Fish only saltwater setup up in my living room. The living room is where the front door is located. the Aquarium was set back far enough to allow the door to open with no problem.
My background is Electricial Construction and Electronics, so I was the "Know it All" I thought it would be cool to have a nice 19' color TV on the bottom shelf, which I did and it was cool. No problems I was always sure to be careful around that aquarium and stand. Had it there for about 10 months. My next door neighbors were selling thier house and moving on a boat so they could not take their dog (87lb Doberman). She was a real sweetheart so I said hey I have room and she grew up with my Labs. So she became part of the family which included coming into the house. SHe could get very excited about company coming to the front door. About 3 months after getting her - I was coming home and opened the front door and she was really excited with her stub butt wagging back and forth and that girl remember this is a 87lbs dog backed right up and into the aquarium with the TV on the bottom shelf. Well as the old story goes - there was a tidal wave that splashed water right out of the aquarium and down into the TV set. Bingo - saltwater and TV's don't go and work well together. It was one of the older types but it was still plugged in. I unplugged it and got my wife's hair dryer and started to dry out the TV. After a couple hours plugged it back in and sure enough nothing. Great. Long story short, took the TV down to my Electronics Lab, put it on the table opened it up and spent a week cleaning salt corrision and replacing shorted components. Needless to say that I have never put a TV under an aquarium again. ![]() Last edited by WHOSYOURDADDY; 06-08-2005 at 09:54 AM. |

Here is a fresh one... I was putting in my 3 gallon fresh water container to drip in some replacement water, and hit the hose that is connected to my skimmer pump, a MAG 12. POP off comes teh hose and saltwater spraying all over the place! Guess that is one of the kinks I have to work out with the new tank... Now where did I put those plastic hose clamps?????
