Refugium Problems

I set up this refugium about 5 weeks ago. I put a 2 pieces of plexiglass in a tank that is 12x24x16 to make 3 compartments. I have the overflow going into the section with my turbofloater. I have a middle section which I thought would act as my refugium. The last section has a return pump. I have a small lamp for light and I just added a rio 50 to the center section. I am getting brown blobs that must be some sort of algae. I put about 7 snails in along with two hermit crabs and some macroalgae. All but one of my snails have died. The brown blobs are now anchoring themselves in my algae. I add about a half gallon of ro/di water to the return pump section every day. What am I doing wrong?

Do they look like they could be sponges? Almost all my macroalgae is full of sponges...some brown some white even some pink ones.
