Custom SeaLife Power Compact vs Orbit

All of you probably know by now that Custom SeaLife went Chapter 11, but the new "spring up" company is CurrentUSA. Custom SeaLife made a Power Compact that is no longer available because the company went out of business, however, does anyone know why??
I have heard that CSL had trouble with their power compact light, and that there were fires started because of the light. Does any one know the truth to this, or where some online resource can be found on this?? The reason the former company Custom SeaLife gives as to why it went out of business is that it was a "personal business decision based on competitive climate in the industry".......??????? Personally, I think they are hiding something.

Ironically, the new company, CurrentUSA is making a light that is virtually identical to the CSL light, and I want the info so a choice can be made regarding purchasing this light.
Thanks: e-mail me if you would like

I haven't heard of any problems with the CSL lights setting fire, nor have I heard anything about the new Current USA lights. As far as I know, the guts of the system is about the same as the old CSL with a new external look.

Hello,
Custom Sea Life closed and then was sold by the owner to a group of the former managers. The owner retired. Some of the products have been redesigned and are better IMO. I have many customers that have the old CSL lighting products and they work just fine. The repacement bulbs sold by the new company Current will work in the old CSL fixtures. I've sold more than 50 of the light fixtures from Current over the last 18 months without any major problems.

HTH,
Kevin

Kevinpo...

Hey man, thanks for your reply. I'm finding out what I need to thanks to this forum. However, as good as Current/Orbit may be, beware of companies that sell it and their "rules" .. Have you ever delt with "MarineDepot.com".

I thought their catalogue was great, and their prices good, but I orderd an Orbit 4X96 watt with the moon lites. I thought I made a mistake because the fixture has all the fans and plug/cords opposite what I need, so that makes it bad for me. However, now I noticed that the actual aluminum casing was assembled ( or possibly, but not likely, done in shipping) with a gap in the top and the brackets coming out. My point is the light is obviously "defective in appearence" but works fine. I only tensted it once. and want to sell it to someone because it doesn't fit my wants. My complaint about Marine Depot is that after calling them, and re-reading their purchase/return rules, they are not reasonable in their business to consumer compared to someone like Dr Foster-Smith. They won't take the light back, as they say it was "used" simply because I assembled the lights and plugged in the cords to test the lights. Also, even if the light is damaged or comes to me "defective", I have to pay for shipping back to the company (shared 50-50), which if find unreasonable. I have had such a go-around with this company I will never do business with them. I recommend that others be careful if you think about doing busines with them.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. Anyone interested in a "used" ( Brand spanking new, but plugged in once) Orbit 4X96 fixture??

I have dealt with them for 10 years ($10,000+) and never had a problem with them. Their policy is pretty much industry standard, including wholesale companies. As a LFS owner I usually have to pay the shipping back to the supplier when customers return defective products.

You bring up one of the best arguments for buying products from your LFS. You are able to inspect them before purchase.

Regards,
Kevin

I would recommend you contact Current directly and explain your situation. They may be able to help you and replace the unit.

Kevin
