Moving livestock to a new tank

Ok I think I am leaning towards getting a bigger tank. Right now I have a 12gallon with some live rock and a couple of fish. How should I go about setting up the new tank? Should I set it up first and let it cycle and then put in my rocks and livestock? Or should I put some of the rock into the new tank in the beginning to help it along with the cycling?

My thought was to set the new tank up, put a few pounds of the live rock to help it along and then when it is ready add the rest of the rock and the livestock? Would that idea work?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

My method used when moving to a bigger tank.
I prepared the new tank with all neccessary items first [ more LR , sand , test water parameter , cycled ]
When tank is ready .
I took out water from the old tank , mixed with the new tank.
Then i move the livestock over
Decomissioned the old tank

Thanks for the reply. How long did it take the tank to cycle? I was thinking if I add some of my live rock I have in the old tank it might speed things up

You are correct in thinking that. The old liverock is going to have a lot of beneficial bacteria populated and will increase the rate of the cycle since the populations are present and will only have to increase in size to handle the load.
