Like to have some green in the tank
Hi , I would like to have some green in the tank.
I went to a LFS the other day and saw some seagrass(i think it is). They look like some ferns( they are rooted to pieces of liverock) or feather star . They are very green and the owner of the LFS told me it would help to control nitrate ? Can i know what are the suitable seagrass/plant that can be added to the maintank ? Any link direct would be good . Anyone with plant in the tank to show ? Thanks Mman ![]() |

Hi Mman,
I personally would keep away from any marine plants or algae in the display tank. The owner was right that they do absorb nitrate for growth however they are better off performing this activity in a seperate vessel such as a refugium. The problem with putting them in the display is that they often grow uncontrollably and as soon as you want to remove it from the display it is impossible to. |

My suggestion would be to google for Macro Algae and research what you find on it. Then you can also find different types with different looks. You might find some that would look very decorative and good in your tank--of course the opposite holds true as well. Currently I have several different types of macro in my tank some of which is free floating, I don't like it much but am waiting until a local reefer can grow some of his more decorative stuff back and then acquire a snip from that. Also--watch to make sure the stuff does not go sexual on you--it will ruin your tank for sure. I think all that requires is that you do some pruning once a week or every other week. Anne |
