Question on skimmer activity

Sometimes my skimmer doesn't seem to be skimming. Other times, its foaming like crazy. Don't bother asking me what skimmer it is, its old and is going to be replaced eventually. I was just curious as to wether or not my skimmer should be producing all the time. I have a very light bio-load right now. Does this mean that it would be normal for my skimmer to be only producing part time?

Skimmers can vary in their performance (particularly old designs) because of many things; hands in the water, foods and feeding schedule, even the weather/barometric pressure can affect their function.

So then the answer would be that they don't necessarily produce 100% of the time. Right?

I notice that after working in the tank and feeding thawed brine and mysid our skimmer stops producing for about an hour.

I have had a few minor problems with our skimmer as well. I did not realize having my hands in the tank could affect the output. It does seem to do better when I dose magnesium.
