What skimmer should I get?
Hello
I recently purchased a 46g tank and am wondering what type of skimmer to get. Also what size and how many powerheads would I need? Any replies would help. Thanks! |

There is much we need to know before your questions can be properly addressed. For the skimmer, do you need a hang-on variety or will this aquarium have a sump? And regarding the run of powerheads, it would be best to know what you want to keep. A fish-only setup would need a different flow rate than an LPS dominated coral display versus a SPS style tank.
Take a look here for some skimmer reviews, http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/cav1i1...mpressions.htm |

I think that I will go with the hang on style. I don't plan on doing a sump with this 46 gallon. I would eventually like to upgrade to a 72 g in the future and do a sump with that. I am also doing a FOWLR setup until I get experience. Thanks for the reply.

I like the AquaC Remora Pro with the prefilter/bubble trap attachments using a MAG pump for this application.

I too like the Remora Pro with Mag-Drive 3, but I would forgo the prefilter/bubble trap. It does not hook on all that well. For me, it kept falling off.
For better performance at significantly more money, look into the Deltec hang-on. |

Thanks for the replies guys. Now if I were to go with the hang on style, would I be able to use it in the future with a sump set up? I would like to upgrade to a larger tank in the future.

Sure you can. However most people would agree that once they move to a larger system it is also time to move to a larger protein skimmer as well.

I also wanted to mention that the Remora Pro was big enough for your current 46 as well as a future 72.

Thanks guys, sounds like I will be going with the Remora Pro. One last question. Is there any difference in going with a hang on style or in sump when I eventually move to a larger tank with a sump?

In-Sump skimmers are usually rated for more capacity since they are larger and larger pumps power them.

So is one better than the other or will they filter the same?

The more powerful the skimmer, the better in my opinion. However the AquaC Remora will be a great skimmer for a hang-on for your system.

I'll ask the same question...what protein skimmer would you suggest for my set-up...75gal, wet/dry trickle type filter with a sump. Tanks going to be FOWLER. Lookin for in-sump skimmers. Thanks for any advice!

Do not know if this is on topic but reading this thread just saved me from buying a skilter. I have a skimmer which I am not happy with the required pump is a Sens 500gph pump which rests on the bottom of the tank. It runs hot and the skimmer has a tendency to over flow on to the floor. I am looking for a inexpesive replacement. Is the ViaAqua Multi-Skimmer any use Seems to be very inexpensive and comes with a UV unit
thanks RMW |

I am a big fan of the ASM series skimmers. They are good performers at a reasonable price.

Don't forget the CPR BakPak, works great and is HO like the Remora. Just make sure to get the MaxiJet upgrade.

Hi Guys,
A few months ago, I purchased a FI627 skimmer from this company and brought it into Australia: http://www.jdmtechnologies.net/600skimmers.html It has been awesome running on a 150G reef system. Great 'bang for the bucks' (keep this in context )and top craftsmanship.BTW, you can always keep your 49g as a nano and have a larger tank too! Best regards, Tone |

I like the always faithful (to me at least) CPR Backpack Double pak. With two maxi jet 1200's it is not that loud, 9 it is next to my head when I sleep. I am always getting nice dark colored skimmate and couldn't be happier. I also use one surface extractor and leave the other pump alone, Very nice water and sump free tank. Good luck
