I buy whatever spray paint the local hardware store has that is cheap and the color I like. The best tips I can offer are to tape off and cover with newspaper the areas you don't want paint on and apply multiple thin layers.

We bought black felt out of the crafts department at Walmart and just glued it onto the back and it looks just like it's been painted without the fumes and the mess

Whatever you decide to use to cover it go with black for your viewing pleasure. I went with blue on one of my tanks and I hate it.

This sounds like a much simpler solution. What type of adhesive did you use to glue the felt to the glass? Do you have any problems with separation?

We used super glue gel and attached the felt to the top and bottom trim of the tank. It wasn't difficult to do, just don't apply pressure right on the area that you glued because it will seep through. And no, there hasn't been any separation. It has been up for more than 3 years now with no problems.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I think I may try the felt idea.

Paint

Try Testors Spray Enamel, covers like glass and is listed for glass. Lot's of overspray so make sure to tape the bottom and top rims and ****cover the top of the tank****. Comes in blue and black.
