poly filter

Every 2 weeks I go to LFS to get poly filter to put into my overflows I buy two pieces that are 2'x2'(6.95 ea).
well I asked him to sell me a roll of it they come in a roll thats 25'x2' well he gave me some ridiculas price. Also diatom bags would like to buy a box of them. Does anybody know where I can get these items in bulk?

You might try Aquatic Eco Systems.

Jerrod,

I think you probably mean polyester batting, right? When most of us use the term "poly filters," we are thinking of a product made by Poly Bio Marine but I don't think that's what you're talking about. You probably are talking about the blue and white padding that you can purchase at any crafts shop that sells quilting supplies and stuff like that.

the stuff Im talking about is all white is about 5/8 thick it is also what I use on the inside of my cleaning magnet I did see the blue and white bio marine at marine depot. isnt the blue part a really coarse filter and really use less.
do you guys put any thing into your overflows the LFS calls the stuff that I but poly filter.
I was thinking about a craft store but I want to get the right stuff not some stuff that might just desinigrate in my tank. heres pic of the filter material and my diatom bags

Jerrod,

OK, the poly filters from Poly Bio Marine are all white and very expensive. A little piece about 4"x8" sells for about six bucks.

What you are showing in your pics is just some sort of polyester batting. The kind that I use is blue on one side and white on the other. The blue side is denser than the white side.

You can probably find the stuff you want at any crafts store that sells supplies for quilting.

I rinse it out under warm tapwater in the kitchen sink every two or three days. I replace it with a new one every six months or so.

Jerrod,

The polyester filter stuff in your pictures looks exactly like what they sell at crafts stores in the quilting department. Also, you can find it online if you run a search using the term "quilt batting." The reason I know that is because I did an online search just yesterday trying to find the kind that came with my sump. Unfortunately, the only stuff I could find looks exactly like what you are using and not like the stuff I have. The stuff I have seems much less dense than the other kind. Mine is half blue and half white and I couldn't find anything that was half and half online. I ordered an extra 2'x2' piece from the guy in Colorado who built my sump but he charges a steep price for it and I was hoping to find it online.

I took a small sample of my filter stuff with me to a local store called Hobby Lobby hoping to be able to pick up some there but all they had was white batting that looked a lot denser than what I have now. Most of what they had was polyester but some was cotton. Also, if you buy anything like that from a crafts store you have to be careful that it is NOT treated with any chemicals to kill pests. You can probably find the exact same stuff the LFS is trying to sell you but at MUCH cheaper prices.

Jerrod,

This doesn't seem right. If I were you, I would try to find out EXACTLY what your polyester filter material your LFS is selling you is made of. I don't think it should cause this sort of reaction if it is inert. What you are describing is a chemical reaction when you place new filter material into your system. Something's wrong here.

Maybe you should explain this to the guy at the LFS and demand to know exactly what the product is that he's selling you. You will need to know exactly what it is made of and whether it is treated in any way. Maybe that's why the stuff that came with my sump (the blue and white stuff) is different looking than what I could find locally?

I think I may have solved the mystery of what my sump manufacturer is using as the final polyester filter pad in his sumps. I thought that it was some sort of quilt batting but now I'm not sure. I think it may be Blue/White HVAC 1" polyester filter media:

http://www.filtersfirst.com/catalog_detail.htm

This is the way it is described on the sump manufacturer's website:

Blue/white Polyester filter pads, 24x24 square, you cut to size, each: $12.00

http://www.lifereef.com/frame.html

I guess my next challenge is to try to find some of this stuff locally so that I can make sure I'm getting the same stuff. I have a small sample piece that I saved from the scrap the last time I cut some of it to size.
