I would use a SCWD device if anything at all. Check the sponsors pages, they are a pressure powered switching device to direct flow from one side to another. They are not that expensive either.

Other options in addition to the SCWD would be one of those Ocean Motions devices or actuated ball valves, but both are much more expensive.

They'll definitely help with water movement throughout the tank opposed to one direction.

I have used SCWD's and Sea Swirls, unless SCWD has come out with a larger model I would use a SCWD on something like a 75g or 90g and Sea Swirls on a 120 or above. I love both of them though!

randy 1, we seem to be in the same boat as i am too setting up a 90g tank and i have been posting a few questions on this forum, reading lots of posts, and checking out different products in search of good methods of flow for cirrculation and sump return.I've also been looking really close at the tunze streams and controller for my cirrculation but the sand bed getting washed around is a concern.I've been thinking about maybe going with a bare bottom tank with maybe just some live rock rubble on the bottom for esthitics only. This would solve the washed out sand bed from the tunze issue along with waste accumulation.
next i still need to do some research on doing a deep sand bed in my sump using live sand and/or a refugium.I just bought a new sump that has a pretty high water level so this might work for me.If so then ill have to then decide on my return pump.maybe a mag 9 or 12.I still want to research those squid devises some for their noise level and such.
so randy 1,are you also thinking about these other issues like i am or do you know what your going to do?For that matter you may already have your tank running and im just spining my wheels
what do you have going as far as live rock?I've been cureing about 115lbs or live rock for about 3 weeks, finally got my stand modified for my sump and will be setting it all up this or next weekend.good luck to you!!

RE: Closed loop

Hi, I think I've decided the best way to get the proper flow and wave action is a Tunze stream with a single controller and possibly adding a second Tuze stream later. Closes loop is fine but there is a lot of plumbing and not sure that will fill my flow requirments. I have a 2-3 in sand bed in my tank and have accepted the fact that in my get re-aranged a little at first. These Tunze streams have a large opening so it seems it my not have the high preasure one would think.

They do not have the velocity but they do still move a lot of water. Your going to experience some sand displacement at first but it will settle and you won't have any problems. If you are considering 2, I would go ahead and add both so you don;t have to deal with a sand storm after the fact.
