ER: Filter Bags
I started use miron filter bags to control mico bubbles getting back into the tank and WOW what a difference. The tank seems not to have water in it now, I'm very pleased with the look. However, the filter bags are getting dirty very quickly can I wash or even bleach them to re-use?

I wash and reuse mine. I bought 20 of them from filterbag.com. I change them after about 3 or 4 days. I prewash them with the garden hose and then accumulate them until I have used most of them. I run them through the washer with some bleach and then run them a second time with plain water. They come out as good as new.

My drain lines from the tank empty into filter socks before entering the sump. With 2 Tunze 6100s keeping the tank stirred up, I found that I had a lot of stuff floating around in the water. The filter socks eliminated that problem. They are also useful when blowing off the rocks with old turkey baster.

Filter Bags
What micron rating are you using? I would think 100 microns?

RE: Filter bags
After using these filter bags for several Weeks and enjoying ultra-clear water I noticed my Xenia starting to shrink. After talking to some fellow reef keepers it seems I may have striped the water so clean that nutrients have been removed. I done a water change and removed the filter bag and sure enough Xenia started to come around. I'll only use them occasional now.

You will get better life out ouf your bags by going nylon mesh and not the felt material. Then add a handful of filter floss into the bag which can be thrown out. I buy polypro floss by the large bag at WalMart that is sold for stuffing pillows. It is cheap and works great.
You are right about it taking food from the softies. just increase you feed rate to make up for it. |
