My friend recieved a fish only saltwater tank but when i saw it i notied that it was running an undergravel filter. I had never seen that b4 and he wants to make a reef tank out of it. I told him to ditch the undergravel filter but he wants to know if he needs to take out the plate underneath, or is it o.k. to leave it there. there is about 3 inches of substaraye over the top of plate and you cannot see it nor is there a way for something to get under there, can he leave it in. I dont know the answer to that one. Thanks

I would remove it. The space under the filter is a place for detritus to accumulate and this will lead to problems.

I concur. I would remove it. Also, if you friend is looking for a decent book to help him learn about his new hobby, I would suggest Nilsen & Fossa's "Reef Secrets".

I'll have to add that one to my list too.
