RE: Tunze

Well, I just added my new Tunze 6000 with single controler and photo sensor. This thing really moves water but I expected a more dramatic affect in my 90Gal. Its still too soon to tell but I think it will be fine and with my main pump I really shouldn't need anything else, turning the tank over about 28times an hour total. My tank is so clear and no bubbles it really hard it see movement.

After you have had it for a while, give us another report.

What did you mean when you said " expected a more dramatic affect in my 90Gal?" One of the great things about the Tunze's is that they move water over a large area opposed to a small flow with high velocity. Is this what you were expecting?

My 6100's moved enough water to affect the growth pattern of anything in their path. A couple of acros actually grew bent in the direction of the flow, much like a tree on a mountaintop. My clowns surfed the stream, getting pushed halfway across the tank before getting out of the flow. Pretty dramatic, if you ask me.

RE: Tunze effect

Well, it seems all I needed was better positioning. At first I had the unit position longitudinally but I really couldn’t detect any wave action in the tank. I now am bouncing the flow off the front glass giving the reef a strong but even deflected flow. The controller is set to 30% to 100% at about 7 second intervals. I actually turned the unit upside down on my magnetic holder and rotated the solid section up to prevent vortex on the surface. This higher placement allows for some surface agitation giving a more dramatic wave action. I also learned that I could upgrade the transformer to make my 6000 to a 6100 doubling the flow! I may conceder that someday. Right now I’m quit pleased with the effect and overall circulation in the tank, the fish also seem to love swimming in the flow.

I am not familiar with the controllers. Are you saying that over the course of 7 seconds the pump output goes from 30% to 100% and then over another 7 seconds back down to 30%?

The pumps don't ramp up and down gradually. They toggle between low and high speed at the interval set on the controller. There must be some controlled acceleration, since running the pumps on a wavemaker other than the Tunze controller can damage the pumps.

Ok so you can go from 30% and then 7 seconds later up to 100% (in one burst) and then 7 seconds later back down to 30% (again in one burst)?

Yes, The pulse time can be set from I guess 0 to as long as about 7sec. that is the time between waves. The controller 1 is your lowest setting it can go as low as 30% of the pumps rating. The next next adjustment is your highest setting I run that at 100% of my Tunze rating. This gives a nice tidal action.
