Help with "dust" algae

ok I down sized two weeks ago from a 37 gallon to a 30 gallon cube the 37 had been set up for about 2.5 years the 37 was mostly fowlr with a couple of mushrooms,a couple of zenia and some anemones i had about 60-75 lbs of live rock in the 37 and a live sand base the lighting on the 37 was as follows 130 watt pc( 3 ) actinic and 1 10k tube and a 75 watt MH 5500k. i use a sump filter on old and moved it to the new tank the sump has built in skimmer.Ok the new tank 30 gallon cube(oceanic) used the original live sand and most of the live rock(space reasons) I used half the original water and 1/2 pre mixed sea water. The tank looked crystal clear for a week and a half or so now for the last 3-4 days i have had a horrible green "dusty" algae outbreak and it seems to be getting worse on the glass, sand and surface of water.the new tank has (2) 96 watt 50/50 pc fixtures on it 12 on 12 off
i tested tonight and the results were as follows

Temp-77
SG-1.023
Ph-8.4
Ammonia-0.25
Nittrate-20
Nitrite-0
Phosphate-0.1
Calcium-450ppm
5 dkh

I'm not surprised, these disruptions usually cause some algae problems. Your best course of action is to manually remove as much as possible and continue with the water changes. I would suspect that as the tank stabalizes it will go away.

Jay, just taking Scotts' response a little further ...

Is the algae in the water column? Is this contributing to the "dustiness" in the water / cloudy water?

From my own experience a few years ago, my tank was beset with a brown algae in the water that was so cloudy that visibility would have been a couple of inches at best. After months of trying every good bit of advice (in these situatuations, any advice is good ) I put on a UV unit and the water cleared overnight.

Do what scott has advised and if you have access to a UV unit put it on as well. It might help you as it did for me.

All the best,

Tone

Sounds to me like jayreefer may be experiencing diatom outbreak. I've noticed this to be pretty common in newly established tanks, when changing lights or some other parameter gets out of whack.
