Question Opinion on SCWD placement

Hi guys.

I'm new to reefland and about to setup a new 75G tank. I'll be moving my FOWLR into it for now, but I'd like to start some polyps/SPS in a few months. I plan on incorporating a SCWD for flow. Originally I was giong to put it in my return line when I setup the new tank, but after reading a few threads, I wonder if it would be better to wait and put it on it's own closed loop when I get ready for coral. My concern would be limiting the flow of the planned Mag 9.5 on the return and it not keeping up with the planned 800GPH overflow box.
Thanks in advance for the opinions.

Chris

Hi adamscl,

I think it would be wise to put it on it's own dedicated loop, not only for the same of the overflow but just to have the security that your main tank will run if something happens with the plumbing of the device or the device itself. I would suggest that you go ahead and incorporate the closed loop in the system now opposed to trying to add it after the tank is running.

Thanks Scott, I'll take your advice. BTW, I know you all hear it a lot, but the service this forum is providing is incredibly useful to folks like me. I have a hard time completely trusting my LFS - good guys, but they always seem to be pushing new equipment. Thanks again.

Thanks for the compliment Adam. There are some good local stores out there, but they are all looking to make money and that should always be weighed in on any advice they give you.
