i got a new 90 gal aquarium for christmas and i was wondering what type of filtration i should be using. i will be keeping fish and corals in this tank. i am willing to drill holes in this tank since it is not setup yet unlike the 55 i aquired about in an earlier post. but the only thing is, is it safe if the electric goes out? this is unchartered waters for me about wet/drys and refugiums. i will be purchasing a remora c protien skimmer for this tank also.

Hi george16u,
Let's start from the beginning here. Is this a glass tank or acrylic? If glass, is the bottom tempered? If so, it cannot be drilled through the bottom and you will have to look at drilling the back near the top and fixing an acrylic overflow box to over it. |

Ok, so your either going to have to go with one of two options.
1. Have the back of the glass drilled about 2" below the tank trim at the top and affix an overflow box in front of the whole. 2. An easier and trust worthy option is to get an external overflow box. CPR seems to be more trust worthy than before and many people here at Reefland use them. |

i was wondering if your going to use a hang on skimmer why not use a hang on ref and not drill the tank at all. i was just wondering as a lot of people who want to set up "reefs" think that it is some kind of requirement along with a lot of other equipment the lfs tries to pon off on the unexpecting aquarist. a good skimmer good lights and a hang on ref thinks thats a great place to start and cant think of a good reason to drill the tank at all.
