Hey jiggly,

They are actually made by Taam (Rio pumps) and although I've never used the Seio's, I wouldn't due to the Rio reputation. For a powerful internal device, look at the Tunze Streams.

tunze streams are for sure the way to go if your pocket allows it. if not, the seio's, imo are a great pump. i have had nothing but horrible experiences with rio pumps, but the seio is an exception in my mind. do not put on a wavetimer, that is is the only downfall. i have ran one for about 11 months now problem free and i only cleaned it once.

I didn't know they are made by Rio. Rio pumps never last long for me.

I have 4 Maxi1200's right now on my 90 gallon with a 3 inch sand bed. Can any one recommend what size Tunze would work? I and my SPS corals like a lot of flow!!!

Thanks for the quick responses!!

I think the bad reputation that rio received forced their marketing group to come up with a different name to disassociate the problems they had.

WE run 2 6060's in our 75 and they add a lot of flow, but they are not controllable. The controllable ones would be much nicer and move a lot more water but also cost more. The 6060's move 1160 gph.

Actually, Marine Depot lists their 6060's at 1600 gph, not meaning to quibble.[listed 11w too ] I like mine, though as stated ... not controllable.

I also have been using the Seio pumps - now for over a year without problems. Due to reputation, I avoided Rios - but yet have been quite happy with my Seio 820's. Larger ones I've heard problems restarting [they do say not to run on a wavemaker - so when are you restarting them?] ... but I've been happy with flow/power-use off them.

Well I run a 6060 in my 90 with a DSB, it moved the sand around a little. ABout the seio's, my friend who owns a LFS has gone through 2 of them in his reef sales tank. They seem to chatter and then quit. This has been very recent, last month, so maybe Rio made a change in the production process?

I think your right Mark, 1600 is what it is. I'm jipping my tank of a few gph!

I think i'll go with 2 6060's with a controller. Will that be comparable to the flow I get from the 4 Maxi 1200's?

The 6060's are not controllable. You will need to get the 6000, 6100 or 6200 to have control. The 6000 is rated at 1850gph.

And no, there will be no comparison to your current 4-MJ 1200's. The Tunze Streams will Blow Them Away! Your MJ's are only pushing 1200gph combined. 1 Stream is going to provide more movement across a wider stream. You'll be very happy with 2 of them.

I have a Seio 620 and have never had an ounce of problems with it. The Seio is a nice, less expensive alternative to the Tunze pumps.

I am also running a Rio 12HF as my return pump for well over a year with no problems from it.

I just purchased 2 Seio 820's, they came highly recommended from people at Wet Web Media. I have an 85 gallon tank. I have a question for you and anyone else who would like to give their opinion: Where is the best position to place these powerheads? (IE: top 3 inches of tank, midlevel etc).

Hi editour2,

I think the answer can only be provided by you. Personally, I like to use my internal pumps to move water everywhere possible in the tank and therefore have one positioned at the top of one side blowing across and the other at the bottom of the other side blowing across.

What is important is to eliminate as many "dead" areas as possible.

FWIW, I fried a Seio 820 last year. It pretty much melted just like my old Rio 2500 did, the only difference is Seio didn't pollute the tank.

The older model Seio's that I have run ceramic shafts on ceramic guides. I've found that running both Ca and kalk reactors will cause the ceramic to bond. I can run my Ca reactor with out any problems, same with the Kalk reactor, using both and these pumps have to be acid washed once a week.

If you must use powerheads in your tank the Tunze's are the way to go.
