noisy overflow

Just replaced my return pump with a bigger one. Now pushing about 600 g/hr.

Because the pump is bigger, I had to add more water to keep it underwater, but that has caused the water level in the tank to rise and the water going through the overflow is making a ton of noise.

Any way to stop it or lessen the noise?

Nate

Hi Nate,

Do you use a durso standpipe in your overflow? Is this an internal (drilled) overflow or external?

It's "reefready." Ya know, the box in the corner with the slits at the top?

There is some kind of "pipe" in it, but it's maybe 8 inches tall. I've read a lot about the durso but I have no idea what it is.

Do a search here for durso or stockman standpipe; it is simple and the cure to your problems.

you can put an air valve at the of the pipe and controle the flow
you mean gurgiling sound rigth or get a larger return pump

Or you can simply drill a hole on the top of your durso. This will aid with the vacuum effect and minimize the gurgling. The durso site also has directions on attaching a more elaborate "bleeding valve".

G,

If I read it right, he currently does not have a durso or stockman standpipe, probably just the general pipe that comes with Oceanic systems, etc. A think setting up a durso or stockman is what needs to be done in this case.

ALright. I installed a durso ( had a heckuva time finding a 90 degree street EL). Now I guess I need to fine tune it. The water level still fluctuates about an an inch so there is still some noise -- sounds like water draining down a pipe

Anyway, I've already drilled about 5 1/8 holes in the cap. Do you think I should keep making holes until I get it right?

I was just thinking --

the plumbing for the overflow is 1". Following the durso directions it says to use 1 1/4" pvc. Could it cause a noise problem flowing from 1 /4" at the top and then reducing down to 1" before it heads into the sump?

If that is the case, should I make the durso out of 1"?

Nevermind. I found the problem. As the water flows down the overflow tube into the sump, it kind of just dumps into the sump, causing noise. My overflow tube to the sump does not go straight down, it kind of "Ls" as it enters the sump so as the water travels down the tube, it pushes the other water out of the way, causing it dump into the sump.

Glad you figured it out. It is one of the finest inventions for aquariums utilizing a sump.
