Tank Broke!
I have been off the board for a while. Between kids, work, and now my parents health things just got too busy.
Anyway in October I came home and found a large crack across the front of my 180 and about two inches of water in the tank. I did save some corals and all my fish but one. They went to the local LFS for pennies on the dollar but at least they lived. So I pretty much lost everythng. I was so knocked down with this I was ready to quit. A day later I gave away about 200 lbs of live rock so it wouldn't go bad. My best guess was that the oak stand fatigued. I was never happy with the stand but got it to get the warrenty which now seems stupid. With the quick action of my insurance company and a water damage team that showed up my oak floors just need a light refinishing. Most of the water ended up in the basement which is not finished. As of now I haven't got a penny from the Insurance co but that was my fault for waiting to get the ball rolling. It looks like I will end up with about $2500 when all is said and done. They do not cover the tank or tank contents. The local LFS put the contents from recent photos at about $4800 not including the tank. Anyways, after a couple of months I have found that I can't give it up. I have a huge space in the room that my wife (in her great wisdom) has refused to fill. With the $2500 I will be getting a new tank and stand and here is where I need some advice. I'm looking for a glass 72Lx30Wx24H. I haven't had to look for a tank in 5 years so any advice on what's and who's good at putting out a quality tank will really help. For the stand I have contacted a weld shop about making the stand that I have designed out of 3" angle iron that I will wrap with oak. Thanks, Bill |

how about a 225 acrylic, 72x24x30, with overflow for around $1500? Pro Clear Aquatic brand. I know the height and width are backwards from what you asked for, but I am close. Of course shipping would be extra...
This is a price from a LFS in my area... |

I feel for you. My 210 broke around the same time as your 180. I very nearly walked away from the whole thing, but within a week I had changed my mind. Like you, my livestock went for about 1/3 of its value. I am back up and running, this time with a 180. I hope IT doesn't break.
I took the opportunity to reengineer some things, which is much easier when the tank is not running. It will be a long time before the tank looks mature again. Good luck with your new tank. |
