Ozonizer

OK. I finally did it. I got the ozonizer. Aqua Zone Deluxe 50 mg/hr. I have it up and running this morning through my Berlin skimmer. My initial ORP was 67. I set the ozone at the suggested rate of 30 mg/hr (10 mg/hr for each 25 gallons of tank water). The instructions suggest a set point of 300-350 on the ORP. Since my initial reading was only 67, I thought that dialing the set point to 300 would be too big of a change too fast, so I set it at 100 initially. It’s been running for several hours and the ORP is up to 93 now. The water is visibly clearer already. (…and I thought it was pretty darn close to crystal clear already!)

OK…now for the inevitable questions. I’d like to hear from those of you out there in Reefland who use (or have used) ozonizers. As with most things in this hobby (addiction?), there are a variety of opinions. I’ve read all the way from, “It doesn’t matter where you set it as long as you keep it stable,” to “the higher the better, as long as you don’t go above 350.” I’m sure there is some truth in both of those. I could have maintained without an ozonizer and kept it at 67 and the tank would have been status quo.

Where do y’all think I should set the control point on the ORP? How fast/slow should I get there? Hmmm… maybe it’s time for another poll… “Where do you set your ORP?”

Thumbs up

i have not run a ozone unit yet but have been very intrested in trying one out. in all the books i have read "and i reed as much as i can find" the main point of most articles seems to stem from inaccurate orp probes and chasing a number. what i thing would work best it to stick to your original plan. set it to 100 and wait and see how your animals look. if the water is more clear that means the animals will recieve more light and they should look better. if you improve the clarity of the water to fast the animals will get a lot more light energy and may shock them. so mabe an end result of an orp reading of 350 is what you may want to achieve but i would start at 100 watch and evaluate. then if things look good then bump it up mabe 20-25 a week and reevaluate. the most inportant point is what is right in your tank and how the health of your animals are affected. i would use 415 as a magical number as that is the reading i have seen repeadly seen for natural water but then again its just a number and you animals will show you which direction to take.

You did let the ORP probe stablise for a few weeks before you fired up the generator, right? Most of the time these thing start off reading very low and take a few weeks to stabilize. I use the same version but in the 100mg\hr flavore.

My proble started off around 75 and two weeks later was up to 175 and stable with out running the generator. I then fired up the generator and brought the ORP up about 25 points every 2-3 days. until I reached around 350..About a week after getting the ORP up to 350 I started having major RTN issues. I lost about 75% of my sps. I'm not saying the rise in ORP was the casue but I can't think of anything else..

Oh, before you ask water qlarity had nothing to do with it.

My advice is to go real slow and let the probe stablize for a few weeks before you start up the ozone.

Good luck

Hey Johnny,
2 months is a long time to dial in a Ca reactor. Was your effluent drip rate the problem?

Geez! Does that thing go out and buy salt and mix the water for you, too?!?

It took me a while to get my calcium reactor dialed in, too... and now it really is working as they advertised: no more additions of calcium and alkalinity!

Thanks, everyone for sharing your experiences with the ORP probes!
