Water Circulation

So I decided to wait on the closed loop and went ahead and purchased 2 ehiem aquaballs with their 170gph each and the magdrive 3 I have on my skimmer and the aquaclear pushing 900gph I think that'll give me what Im looking for as far as circulation and water movement in the tank for some of the corals that I want. Later on I would like to go CL and add a couple of those rotateing 90 deg deals or even go with one of the wavemaker boxes. I dont really think I want to add an overflow to this tank but perhaps in a few years I will go ahead and move up to a 200 gal and go with the built in overflow. The whole idea of the closed loop was just to get the junk off the back of the tank and adding the overflow would just be putting more junk on the back. But at any rate I think the low flow from the aquaballs will be great pointed towards some of the corals and not be too much flow at them and the aquaclear pump to keep the upper end mostly and the rest of the tanks water in constant motion. The tank is clearing up a bit but not as much as I had hoped. I put some pictures in my album on this site if anyone wants to see some REALLY cloudy water hehe.

I got the aquaballs and I hate em......gonna look around for 2 tunze streams. A babys fart produces more pressure than those aquaballs. Absolutely positivly dissapointed. Took me all but 5 seconds ( thats how long it took me to plug it in and run my hand across it) to decide they suck. The wife is gonna kick my butt when she finds out I want different ones right now .

Looking At Powerheads

i hear a lot of good things about the little maxijets and i am going to use them in my tank. see old ones that have been running for years and still going strong. some people say that the stream is not so good an flow is better than the high pressure streem from a powerhead but i will get the maxi 1200 and bounce the output off the wall of the aquarium to get a wider water movement. best thing is there only like 18dollars on line. i like things that work that dont cost an arm and a leg.

Maxijet's are good reliable powerheads that last a long time. However they don't move a whole lot of water. Although I run several of them, I also run 2 Stream's and they are much, much better. Sure they are more expensive but 1 stream will do what 4MJ's will.

What about the wave2k. That really looks interesting and the water movement looks to be awesome. Never seen one in person, probably bulky as heck, but still it is something Ive looked at as well in place of the streams. I just want to make sure I am moveing all of my water without alot of clutter. I had no idea how well you can actually hide the tunze streams with that fake rock until I saw a picture of reeflands tank the other day. That is a very nice tank. But I think the wave2k would move even more water with even less clutter and more movement with no "jet stream". So much stuff to look at. But 2 corner wave2k units is surely captureing my eye.

I have had my 2 MJ's for 2 years now and have never had any problems with them. The stream's are nice, but the price is a killer. I would like to have 2 streams on a controller, (maybe on the next refinancing of the house)

Here are a couple of articles I wrote on pumps and powerheads:

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume...rhead_comp.htm

I have never used a Wave2K, but have heard it has some reliability issues.

I wish the tunze streams were a little cheaper but I think that is the best choice. Now just to decide on the which tunze to get . I really like that wavemaker setup from them but 700 bucks....wow for 2 pumps and a friggen controller. I think Ill hold off on my pumps until I have 700 bucks
Thanks for the info Steve.

The non-controllable Tunze's are a much better value. They are way more efficient (gph produced versus watt consumed) than most pumps and near the top in value (gph produced versus purchase price).

The vertical axis is a ratio of gph/watt while the horizontal axis is pump models.

I have a Tunze 6100 with a songle controller and I'm VERY happy with this set-up after I got over the cost factor, its the way to go.
