Need a new pump for my skimmer.

My Rio 2500 just went tits up, it was supplying water to a Coralife 125 Super Skimmer. Any recommendations for a replacement? I have not read any thing good about the Rios.

A Mag 7 should be about the same flow. How old was your Rio?

Uhhhh... did it just freeze up or did it burn up? If it freezes up, you can take it apart, soak it in distilled vinegar overnight to clean the calcium out and it will work again. If it burned up, you're S.O.L.

Ouch. Hope it didn't taint your tank.

(Note to self: start replacing the Rio pumps the LFS sold me with the tank setup.)

Funny thing is that I have something living in my tank, I heard a noise for the first time the other night and went to investigate hoping to catch sight of the critter. While I was looking I heard the thumping noise from my sump and saw smoke exiting the water, it was the Rio. I left it in and it crapped out the other day. When I came home the house smelled like peanut butter, the dogs got into that, their dead now and the other side smelled like dead pump. Funny really. Fish are okay.

Rio's are so problematic is seems. I like the suggestion of a Mag 7 or you could also go with a Mag 9 to over power it.

Don't the CL SS skmmers come with needle wheels? You'll probably have to replace the pump with another needle wheel pump. You might be able to find the right size from Ocean Runner, they have replacement pumps for the Aqua Medic pumps that are Needle wheels.

There is a long thread over on the equipment forum at RC..
